‘Tis the Season of the Heart

 In Uncategorized

Now that the groundhog’s gone back to sleep, ‘tis the season of hearts and love (unless you happen into the mall where it’s cherubs + Easter eggs + sandals and swimsuits). So, in the spirit of the season, let’s talk all things heart-centered – from the importance of listening to the council of your own heart, to understanding the heart’s role in wellness, to just taking time to embrace the high-vibration emotions of the season.

Let’s start with what I mean by staying heart centered. I’ve long been encouraging people to pay more attention to the ‘voice’ of their heart/gut. To not discredit the ‘wisdom’ that comes from within in favor of the ‘knowledge’ that accumulates from outside. In an article I recently read, it was described like this, “It [the heart] has been described as the king, with the mind as the king’s adviser. When faced with a decision, the king may ask his advisers for advice, may even send him out into the world to gather information, but ultimately it is the king that makes the final decision. Even though the advisers do not always agree with the king’s decision, the king is invariably right, because the king’s view not only sees the bigger picture but is also aware of the needs of others.” In my own experience, heart-decisions are sometimes uncomfortable, but I’ve rarely regretted them… I can’t say the same of my solely measured, logical, cerebral decisions.

If we know we need to ‘listen’ to it, then we better do our best to keep our heart healthy (besides, you know… it’s pretty important to the ultimate goal of staying alive). I don’t believe it’s any coincidence that the first 2 systems to form in the body are the nervous system (the realm that I work within every day as a chiropractor) and the circulatory system (starting with the heart) – the health of both are at the core of moment-to-moment survival . It’s also not a coincidence that, just like we measure the pulse of circulating blood, we can measure the independent pulse of circulating cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid of the nervous system), or that the beating of the heart is the only organ function that can operate separately from nervous system control. So many mysteries of both the nervous and circulatory system remain to be unraveled. So how do we keep the heart healthy? Surprise (not) we can turn to the 6 Essentials that I’ve talked so often about in reference to nervous system health: Diet (fruits and vegetables to keep you alkaline, and limit acid producing meat/grains/nuts), Drink (adequate water to keep cellular hydration adequate), Exercise (cardiovascular challenging exercises are 1 of the big 3, together with muscle strengthening and neurological balancing), Rest (good quality rest to recharge positively), Breathing (deep, meditative breath that feed back to the autonomic nervous system that you are not in chronic danger/threat), Thinking (positive thoughts include thankfulness and gratitude and the most significant universal solvent for stress… love). Choose one of the 6 to focus on, or set mini-goals in each of the 6 and take a first step right now – as a declaration of self-love this Valentine season.

And lastly for this month, let’s turn our attention to an idea of Love in Energy Medicine. When discussing quantum physics, we start with the premise that everything in the Universe is comprised of energy. If sickness, or feeling less-than in any way, is a diminishment of energy, then restoration comes from adding energy back into the system. This is the reason I spend so much time talking about raising your energy with the tools of purposeful Thankfulness and Gratitude. The energy that trumps even that – the Universal Solvent of low energy if you will – is the energy of Love. Love is the highest vibration there is! So, my prescription for you if you are feeling ‘down’ or if you just want to feel even better is go out and absorb the energy of the season! Fill up on Love – or better yet create some of your own – and spread it liberally – to yourself, to those in your immediate and far-reaching circles, and to the world at large!

Happiest of happy Valentine’s Days!!
